Hyundai strike called off

Date: 10 Jun 2010

CHENNAI: Hyundai Motor India plant resumed work following the agitating workers calling off their strike. An agreement was signed on June 9, 2010 between the company and the workers led by the Hyundai Motor India Employees Union. The union was demanding reinstatement of 67 of their colleagues dismissed last year. The agreement was signed in the presence of the Tamil Nadu labour department officials. It called for a six-member committee to review the dismissal of 35 of the workers. Following the strike, production was halted for two days at the Chennai facility. On Tuesday night around 200 workers resorting to a sit-in at the plant were evicted by the police. According to H W Park, Managing Director, Hyundai Motor, the company had been facing production woes several times in the last four years because of the strikes at the plant. "I want to keep good discipline and make good quality cars," he told reporters after the strike had been called off. The company manufactures over 6 lakh cars annually and is the largest exporter of cars from India.
